cold weather
Question:
My source of miniature Chinese cymbidium species tells me that they tolerate snow without a problem, too… — Ray Barkalow – First Rays Orchids http://www.firstrays.com
Response:
I have just built a screened in porch which is covered during the winter but without heat it can get down to 35% at night . I could put in a small heater to bring the temperature up about 10%. Are there any orchids that will do well in this kind of temperature fluctuation. Thank You
Response:
Many of the Australian dendrobes, kingianum and xdelicatum, in particular, would do ok at these temps, as well as some of the evergreen Japanese and Chinese calanthes. Also, these would be adequate temps to vernalize many of the North American natives which can easily be growen in pot culture- Cyp pubescens, kentuckiense, and parviflorum; pogonias; spiranthes; and calopogons. I’m sure there are others but this is a start on suggestions. Wilford Neptune
Response:
In addition to the orchids mentioned by Wilford Neptune, you could also look into trying cymbidiums and zygopetalums. Both of these can take temperatures down into the mid-30s so long as they are protected from frosts. When the temperatures start to warm up in the spring you can put them outdoors and depending upon where you live, they might be able to take almost full sun. Good luck in your selections.
