Many Chinese Cymbidiums are coming into bloom right now:  Golden Elf and Ensifolium Quan Yin Sushin (?) are but two examples. . . . Response:

Hi Sandra,     Yes, hybridizers have been breeding cyms so we hobbyists can have some in bloom all year round.  Currently some of the best cym hybridizers in the world are in Australia and New Zealand.     Living in Thousand Oaks, you are not that far away from orchid nurseries which may have some of those hybrids available, most are less than a 2 hour drive away for you.  In Santa Barbara you have Cal-Orchid, Orchids by Rowe and Santa Barbara Orchid Estates.  South you have the Rowland Collection, Casa de las Orquideas.     Good luck and good growing.

Response:

Sandra, It’s true that Australians and New Zealanders are doing a lot of cymbidium hybridizing.  The best place to find cymbidiums blooming at other times of the year is to look for them in flower at these other times of the year at shows and special sales.  Santa Barbara Orchid Estate is a great source for year-round cymbidium bloomers.  Six of their Orchid of the Day http://www.sborchid.com/photo%20album%20index.htm plants since July 1st have been cymbidium hybrids.  Colors of pink, yellow and green are not uncommon from July – September.  They are all ensifolium hybrids and are becoming more and more common.  Look for them at the East-West Orchid Show in downtown Los Angeles in October.  You ARE going to that show aren’t you? — Matthew Swift Rancho Cucamonga, where our weather has been just heavenly mild
