New blooms for outdoor-growing orchids (mostly)

Question:

Cymbidium season is taking off in earnest – I have several in bloom, and lots in bud.  It has been a weird fall in Southern California, though – summer was cool and rather humid near the coast, where I live.  But in the last two months, or so, when we usually get some rain and it starts to cool off in earnest, the desert winds kicked up, making for many warm days, and very low humidity.  It seems to have confused the Den. nobiles… I have one in bloom, and several that are starting to bud (something that usually happens in Februay or even March).  It was so dry, I took pity on them when they started to show signs of buds, and have been misting pretty heavily – they need to dry out, but this is ridiculous!  Not even any morning dew.  Hopefully, I get flowers not keikis, but I’d hate to lose the plants, and they were starting to look rather dessicated.. Come and see what is in bloom now at http://rlfox.tripod.com (Roberta’s Orchid Central) Roberta

Happy New Year to you. Nice to hear from someone in my neck of the woods? You are so right about the weather, it has confused all my plants. I do not as yet have one blooming Cymbidium?? I do have a few spikes & some that are sort of stunted?? (very short stems)  I did have to repot all my Cyms because of that dreaded Snow Mold & the fungus. We must definately get together this year. I have quite a few Catt’s blooming in my greenhouse. Hope to run into you at the next show. Cheers Wendy.

Hi, Wendy – Well, it looks like we are finally getting a bit of winter.  (For those of you outside of soutbern California, we got a little tiny bit if rain.  Finally). Perhaps the plants will figure out what to do.  And won’t get so wet that we have to deal with rot instead of dessication. Be sure to put the Fascination of Orchids Show on your calendar (Feb 3,4,5,6) at South Coast Plaza (on Bear St. – Crate and Barrel wing – used to be called "Crystal Court – same place, lots of remodeling, and a new name) Roberta — http://rlfox.tripod.com
