San Fran
Question:
RGOers Due to time constraints beyond my control I am unable to attend the Orchid show on San Fran this weekend (souds like a great time though). I will there for the entire month of March however, and was wondering of anyone has any suggestions for orchid places to visit.
Thank you to everyone who replied – I guess I will still get to see loads of orchids in the san fran area after all! Keith — Keith G. Benson DVM Resident, Zoological Medicine Service University of California-Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital www.geocities.com/rainforest/2011

Did someone already mention Shelldance Orchids? They’ve got a lovely group of greenhouses on a bluff overlooking Pacifica. From SF, head south on hwy 35, and you’ll see big banners flying on the left — can’t miss ‘em. They’re only open on weekends, though, so you have to plan for that. Try to go there, though — the greenhouses are like a dreamland, and she’s got a great variety (infinitely more fun than what’s left of Rod McL’s, imho).cheers, Catherine. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Thank you to everyone who replied – I guess I will still get to see loads of orchids in the san fran area after all! I must second Catherine’s recommendation. The bromeliad houses (rumored to be the largest private collection on the west coast) at Shelldance are stunning, too. Well tended, established plants, all beautifully presented. And there’s always a gorgeous and diverse selection of Masdevallias, too. Well worth the visit– I find I have to go there at least twice a month just to wander around. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Did someone already mention Shelldance Orchids? My orchid society (Sonoma County OS) is having our annual show and sale March 5th, 6th, and 7th. We are about an hour North of San Francisco. It’s a nice event, not too big/overwhelming (can a show be too big?!) and not too small. More info can be found at: http://www.sonic.net/scorchid/ If you would like to visit other nursuries in the area, talk to folks at the show or contact me. There is a great carnivorous plant greenhouse nearby also, if that interests you. Love to see you there, Scott – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Due to time constraints beyond my control I am unable to attend the Orchid show on San Fran this weekend (souds like a great time though). Keith, And if you’re still not tired after going to all of the shows that Jim mentioned and visiting the orchid nurseries that Matt mentioned, you are also invited to come and visit OrchidMania’s greenhouse in San Francisco. It’s not much by other people’s standards. But we (the volunteers) are very proud of it both because of the orchids that we grow and also because of what we do with the sales proceeds–AIDS prevention. Take a look at our website (http://www.orchids.org), and if you’d like to visit, drop me a line. -Mary

just got back from San Francisco, visited McClelland and Shelldance, would have done much more if I could have uncovered them. I’m a little spoilt by the selection and prices at Oakhill Gardens in Chicago, but did buy one plant (a Phrag. besseae mislabelled as a paph) from the "Flower Mart" on Brannon st in SF. worth a visit anyway… Tony

Hi Keith, Too bad you will miss the San Francisco Orchid show over the Feb. 26-28 weekend. Although there are no other shows "in" SF during March, there are some within an hour or so drive. Below is a list by dates of shows. March 5 to 7 is the Sonoma Orchid Society Show in Santa Rosa (about 1 hour north of SF). March 6,7 is the Malihini Orchid Society Show in San Jose (about 1 hour south of SF). March 19 to 21 is the Stocton Orchid Show in Stockton (about 1 hour east of SF). March 26 to 28 is the Orchid Obsession Open House in Yuba City (about 2.5 hours north of SF). March 26 to 28 is the Golden Gate Cymbidium Society Show in Oakland (about 1/2 hour east of SF). March 26 to 28 is the Santa Clara Valley Orchid Society Show in San Jose (1 hour south of SF). Then if you have the time there is the Santa Barbara Orchid Show March 12 to 14 in Santa Barbara (5.5 hour drive south of SF). There will be many orchid vendors from around the world selling at this one along with many orchid nurseries in the area open for the show weekend. Hope this helps. Good luck and hope you enjoy your stay in the SF area.
