Spots on Cymbidum Flowers?
Question:
I don’t see any aphids or evidence of them – and the leaves all look healthy. I’m mystified. Thanks – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, Val, Could the plant be subject to aphids? Are the leaves graying and dying attributed to what one of the speakers at our society denoted as "cymbidium crud"? . . . Pam Everything Orchid Management System http://www.pe.net/~profpam/page3.html Help! My huge, lovely white Cymbidium has had its flowers come down with nasty spots. These are indented, no pattern across the flower, and look to have a tiny dark tan dot in the center. On the reverse of the flower I see a raised dot as if something was attacking the flower. I grow in my house, this plant is in my mud-room/reading room, previously it had been in my dining room under my 250 wt MH light. Sucking insects? If so, what sort? And what do I do to kill them before they get into my Catts? This plant has been away from the other plants for several weeks and nothing else is showing these marks. Many thanks for any comments. Val Nothing on the plant itself – I’ve had some scale and didn’t see any sign.

Without seeing a close up picture of the flower, my best guess would be botrytis cinerea, flower blight. The spores could have been there for a long time. Moisture on the flowers speeds the spread of the disease. Only way you would see it on other plants is if they were in flower and next to the cymbidium. If it is blossom blight, when it gets worse, you will see what looks like a grey mold developing. Good sanitation with air movement also is your best bet. I could be out in left field but really need to see a picture. Stephen
