I am Orchid Illiterate
Question:
Hi, all…. I have a dendrobium orchid that, apparently, I am making miserable and slowly but thoroughly slaughtering. It is no longer blooming, although I have fertilized it and kept it warm. Does it take magic? Or simply some good advice? Any help would be appreciated. It may also save a poor, struggling orchid! Many thanks, sara emily

No magic here unfortunately – just patience and good culture. Many dendrobiums only bloom once per year, either spring or fall so if it’s been less than a year be patient. If the plant has not developed a new growth this spring then the advice from my prior post titled - re:minor dendrobium problem – might apply. Remember, while dendrobiums hate rotten mix and will die in it, they also do not like being repotted when it’s not necessary. Most cane type dens. will grow roots only in the early spring and repotting them after that is usually a mistake. Pull it out of the pot and see if the roots are rotten and repot if it needs it. Here in Florida it is almost too late to repot dens – we are finishing them up right now – but farther north there is still time. good luck, Bob — Davidson Orchids - Florida’s Suncoast’s Largest Orchid Supplier 3605 Palm View Road info/FAX line…(813) 722-9308 Palmetto, FL 34221 order Line….(800) 883-9308 –Seedlings : Blooming Plants : Flasks : Lab Services : Supplies–

lots of light – not direct but close. Let it dry well between waterings. these plants do not like to be overwatered and will respond in kind
Response:
Sara, Dendrobiums are a very diverse genera. Some want to be kept completely dry through the winter, some want water. If you are watering more than once per week cut back to once per week. Use a balanced fertilizer at 1/4 the recommended strength. If the den grows keiki’s, (baby plants), then it probably should be kept dry during the winter.

Sara Emily, may I ask when is the last time the plant flowered ? I doubt I have more advice than was already posted, but "no longer blooming" seems pretty ambiguous. —
