orchids

Question:

I received a beautiful orchid from my brother-in-law as a hostess gift on Thanksgiving. Does anyone know of a web site for orchids or how to care for them.  I hope to keep mine for a long time.

Take a look a www.vengers.com and/or http://orchidweb.org/index.html for culture info.  We need to know what kind of an orchid it is before we can give you any real info.  If the plant has a tag, post what it says.  Else, give us the best description you can.  Until then, I’d recommend bright light but no direct sun, and water only when dry – maybe once a week.   deg – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I received a beautiful orchid from my brother-in-law as a hostess gift on Thanksgiving.   Does anyone know of a web site for orchids or how to care for them.  I hope to keep mine for a long time.   I brought the orchid to the office which has bright light almost all day.   By the way this is a great newsgroup.  I’ve learned quite a few things from here and this will help keep my winter blues at bay. The orchid will help too!!

does any one haye intrest, knowledge or experience with phalaenopsis orchids? I’m a grower experiencing some problems with summer spiking[induced] leading to very poor flower count. We grow in a soiless mix. Does anyone else have these same problems or solutions?

Response:

I have a number of phals and doritanopsis that bloom at varied times of the year. I think that the number of flowers is somehow affected by how many old spikes I leave to compete with the new strong ones. Time of year doesn’t seem to have a detrimental effect. <Phil

None of those web sites is much help if they don’t have the orchid you’re looking for. Unfortunately I don’t have time to subscribe to an orchid newsgroup. Anybody know anything about Dendrobium dichaeoides? Iris

Iris, It’s a cool grower, year round temps low/mid 50’s minimum, low/mid 70’s maximum. Keep moist year round though slightly drier in winter. Reduce fertilizer along with water use. Humidity 60-70%. -Rod- Venger’s Orchids Website http://www.vengers.com/

Lots of places. 1) rec.gardens.orchids 2) To subscribe to the Orchids mail list send a mail message to SUBSCRIBE ORCHIDS 3) Go to http://www.metacrawler.com and enter ‘orchid’ or a particular orchid name to get a list of web sites. } }       Any orchids lovers out there.  Wanna share your }       experience.

Yes, I’m hooked on orchids!! I acquired my first two (a nobile dendrobium – Dend. Pink Beauty ‘Queen’ and a spotted Phalaenopsis) earlier this year, and I recently added a spring-flowering, lavender Cattleya, a Lady-of-the-Night (Brassavola nodosa), and Blc. Gold Country ‘Sutter’s Dream’.  My experiences so far have been positive – no fatalities so far :-)  My husband, however, doesn’t understand my ‘obsession’ – especially since none of the plants are currently in bloom ;-) I have my orchids in a south windowsill garden, except for the Phal., which is now hanging near a south window.  They’re all growing like weeds – must be doing something right (I hope).  I just hope my mother-in-law doesn’t ‘love’ them to death (overwater, etc.) while we’re on vacation. BTW, to all you folks out there who have been thinking about trying orchids, but think they’re ‘too exotic’, ‘too difficult’…  I’ve only been growing them 6 months, but they haven’t been any more trouble than any of my other house plants.  I, too, was very leery at first, but a trip to the library and a look at the AOS (American Orchid Society) Bulletin and some books gave me some confidence.  Just pick an orchid that will do well in the type of conditions you have in your home; Phalaenopsis will do well in most homes — one book suggested that if you can grow African violets successfully, that spot should work well for Phal.  Just one warning: I really do think orchids can be addictive!  Don’t be surprised if you can’t stop at just one :-) Janeane Hascall — John Hascall                        An ill-chosen word is the fool’s messenger. I need help with an orchid plant gift received for christmas. How do I care for it.Dove1 dc Same here!  Its a lovely plant and I’ve been told only to water heavily and let it dry out between, and to mist it.  Should I do more?  WHat kind of fertilizer?? Signed- Kellie

Tell us more about your orchid!  Does it have a label?  What do the flowers/leaves look like?  Does it have a funny sort of thick, wrinkled stem?  What kind of potting medium is it in? The directions you got should keep your orchid alive, but understanding the light and moisture requirements of your particular orchid will help it thrive.  A good rule of thumb for fertilizing orchids is "weakly, weekly."  There are several good, short books on orchids out there- I have Ortho’s All About Growing Orchids, even though I’m an organic gardener. It covers the basics, with lots of pictures. Cara

Kellie, It would help if we knew what kind of Orchid it is. If there’s a tag, email me with the name and I’ll see if I can help you out. You can also basic cultural info. -Rod- Venger’s Orchids Website http://www.vengers.com/

What kind of orchid?  I have grown orchids less than a year but I probably have the types of orchids that you most likely would have received as a gift.  I can help if I know what kind of orchid you have. You might also post a message on the rec.gardens.orchids newsgroup and give the full name from the tag on your plant (I hope there was a tag) or describe its flowers and leaves as best you can.   Sam
