Question:

We have a Dendrobium Orchid that developed two spikes – with 5 buds on one and 4 on the other. The one with the 5 buds has bloomed however on the other spike just when first bud was ready to open the bud became creamy looking and is shriveling.  What can I do?   My wife was going to throw this plant out but I started caring for it – last year it had one spike and the last bud on the spike did the same thing.   It likes just a little water at a time – once a week.   Joe

From the description you gave, it sounds as though there are some environmental conditions or lack of them that is causing those flower buds to blast (die).   Where do you have the dendrobium growing and what are the conditions?  Do you leave it in one place or do you move it about from time to time and what else is near the plant  when it blasts the buds?      Most dens like bright light, an indication of the right amount of light is when the foliage is a nice light to medium green.  Being that you were able to get it to put out the flower spike with buds, you are doing most things right. Now it is a matter of trying to figure out what is causing the bud blast.    Good luck and good growing.

Joe, Bud blast is a classic symptom of low humidity, though there are other causes as well: Aphids/mealie/mites/scale, low temps, direct sun, water on the buds …. -Rod- Venger’s Orchids Website http://www.vengers.com/
