Wanted – Image of My First Orchid
Question:
For a hobbyist with only 3 windowsills to choose from not the ideal option I guess, unless you have plenty of friends…
I don’t have their address, though.
Ahhh….. Poor thing…!
) Three windowsills – that’s two more than me! The majority of the windowsills in our place are taken up by trying to grow dandelions/plantain/opuntia cacti/etc, etc… for the three eating machines (aka – tortoises)… Good luck (is it dead yet?)
Not yet – It’s actually looking quite well still, but I’m not sure how long to leave it in its ’sandwich-bag’ greenhouse… Probably a good while longer (the label said at least 2 weeks, and I guess that’s for one that wasn’t taken from it’s flask before it had *any* root system to speak of…!) Have you had any more luck tracking down what it’s going to look like? Alex.

No, haven’t actually. I have posted a couple of messages on one or two of the orchid bulletin board but have not checked back. However, I am going to visit my favourite orchid supplier in Holland on Thursday (this is becoming a yearly pilgrimage – they are too near my folks home!), and I know he has one of these massive orchid encyclopediae for reference, so at least I’ll be able to give you a description then (if there is a pic). Oh, I have to add my windowsills are all under 1 m in length… Does that get me any more sympathy
By the way, I would just leave it in there and check for mould occasionally. I think it should be quite happy for a while. Haven’t taken mine out of the flask yet, but I don’t think I’ll be able to resist the temptation much longer! Oh, and be careful – orchids are very addictive indeed. I hope your tortoises will like them, as my collection of ‘normal’ plants is steadily giving way to more & more orchids… Good luck! — Hester Lyons to reply remove no_banana from my e-mail address! You’re kidding – My "orchid" windowsill is only 18"

Tell me about it – I’ve just (this afternoon) bought another two of those flask orchids from Vesutor… One’s labelled "Dendrobium Tay Swee King" and the other is "Utriculariodes Ionopsis" (and BTW – If they’re spelt wrong then blame the supplier because I copied the labels to the letter!!) Again – I’ve no idea what they’re going to look like, so I guess I’ll have to do a bit of web browsing after this message…
) Regards, Alex.

Hi all – Perhaps this will help? http://retirees.uwaterloo.ca/~jerry/orchids/oncidium.html Just got an orchid for my MIL this week, didn’t have the presence of mind to ask what type it was, so I may have to take a photo around to find out if the store doesn’t know. Best Bloomin’ luck – JH – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – leaf.demon.co.uk writes Hi All, I’ve just purchased my first orchid. It is an oncidium graminifolium. It’s one of those seedlings that you can buy in the little phials, with the rooting gel stuff. I’ve already made one mistake, in that the roots were far less developed than I first believed, when I chose to pot it on. I’m not holding out too much hope for it, because of that, but I have otherwise followed the care information that came with the young plant, to the letter, so who knows…? Fingers crossed!

) What I’m really interested in is if anyone has a picture of what its blooms look like. I’ve searched the web for about the last 2 hours, but to no avail… Is this because it’s particularly rare, unpopular, or just especially "plain" looking, for an orchid?? I saw a few pictures of other members of the oncidium family and they seemed to be mainly yellow or yellow/brown… Is that the case here, too? If anyone could email me images of this particular species, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks, Alex.

leaf.demon.co.uk writes – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hm, as I have found with Oncidiums (Oncidia??), they are extremely hard to kill. Just out of interest, did yours come from Vesutor Micro Plants? It certainly did! As for ‘hard to kill’ – I really hope that you’re right
) I am just wondering if there are any other companies in the UK who do these things… As it does appear to be a *very* cheap way to get new plants! I’ve not heard of any. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be able to tell you otherwise, but I think it’s likely that they’ve got the monopoly… Out of interest – are they cheaper up North? (Wouldn’t suprise me!) I payed
