Carbon Dioxide Enrichment

Question:

Or brew your beer or wine near your plants, it produces enough CO2.  the beer would take care of the slugs too. Ed Cormier

Really?  I hadn’t thought of that.  I usually ferment my beer on the back porch.  That is a great idea.  I’m serious.  Why didn’t I think of that? I recently read an article that touted the establishement of a compost heap in the greenhouse.  Not only did it generate CO2, which they claimed enhanced growth of plants, but it generated heat too, lowering bills! — Orchid plants (Check out the list): http://www.voicenet.com/~raybark

Several years ago our O.Soc. toured local home-growers, and one of them was an eye-opener !  They had a big lamp mounted on the ceiling (regular house room) that moved around in a big circle. NOW I know what it is..but back then it blew my mind. Orchids filled a number of large tables. Somehow there was water flowing in a table-level conduit, all around them.  And every now and then something was "dripped" into the water.   Vinegar !  I figured there must have been baking soda, or sod. carbonate in the water, thereby contributing both hunidity AND CO2 to the room.  Was it successful? I don’t know – never saw the people again….They did have nice plants. Your question reminded me of that interesting grower….maybe I"ll look them up sometime and see if they are still growing orchids.  In the meantime I will also be interested in responses to your posting.

Never done it, but would be eager to hear other responses to this.  I do recall years ago when I was taking a horticulture class that there was some mention of this in one of the texts.  That is sufficiently vague as to be completely useless, of course, but I do know that you don’t want to over do the CO2… Hey, that kind of rhymes…  You can purchase CO2 in cylinders or if you have a ready supply of dry ice you can steal…er borrow… some from work.
