It is generally considered better to have a *.misc group, rather than having a general group with no final suffix.
Not by some of us it isn’t. We like a general root/broad-base newsgroup at the head of a hierarchy and those broadbase groups are the type we prefer to read. You are entitled to your subgroups…please do not suggest that others should not have their entitlements too. In my view we have enough worthless *.misc subgroups already and do not want any more thank you. The *.misc subgroups are for leftovers not for broad-base general discussion. I like the idea of the .edible group. I would certainly subscribe to it… Lisa Lisa the Wicked Wench of the West the Wise One of k’Sheyna Hold a Jarra Chareen

So far 38 people (or accounts) have made their feelings known on the proposed group. As I am trying to get a feeling for how it is going, I wanted you to know that I have taken some suggestions. The name will change to rec.gardens.EDIBLE There will be NO advertising allowed. (according to the charter, can’t guarantee this will remove it all) I hope more people will go in and let their feelings fly. Currently there are 6 people who have posted and added only comments. The rest have made a note as to whether they are for or against it. As voting at this stage is not mandatory, this is not a vital point. But giving some indication of preference, helps me to decide whether this should go to a vote. Thanks for your participation. Scott Scott D. Good idea. You might also consider making this a more formal reorganization. It is generally considered better to have a *.misc group, rather than having a general group with no final suffix. For example, in the recent rec.scouting reorg, rec.scouting was renamed rec.scouting.misc, and three new rec.scouting.* groups were created. Thus, after a rec.gardens reorg, we might have rec.gardens.misc general gardening discussion rec.gardens.edible discussion about growing plants for food rec.gardens.orchids discussion about growing orchids rec.gardens.roses discussion about growing roses and maybe even rec.gardens.ornamental discussion about growing ornamental plants I only drop in on rec.gardens occasionally, since it has such high volume. I would gladly subscribe to r.g.edible if it existed. Oh, and the charter and one-line summary for the r.g.edible group should acknowledge the overlap between edible and ornamental plants. You might explain that the intentions of the gardener should determine ambiguous cases (e.g., nasturtiums and kale discussions might go in either group, depending on whether the gardener planned to eat the crop; although tomato discussions should go in r.g.edible, even if the gardener didn’t plan to eat the fruit). — "Nice is different than good." — LRRH, Into the Woods
