In association with my local orchid society I have a web site coverfng basic orchid culture, plus more advanced material, based on New Zealand conditions, which will be similar to yours at least for the southern parts of the country. HI Go to the EXPERTS and the ones who have been giving that advice for over 75 years. Visit the American Orchid Society website <http;//www.orchidweb.org Tell them what you got..they will tell you how to grow it. You will find lots of advice on all sorts of websites (including ours) but as a new grower I strongly suggest you hook up with the AOS. This could be quite an adventure for you!!! Chris, hello There really are no general rules for orchid culture . . . luckily, however, many genera can be grouped together . . . but there are _many_ groups! Since you are in Australia, you should have ready access to the books by Rentoul (his "Growing Orchids" series) . . . we import them 2nd hand from your homeland by the seeming "ton". Rentoul divides the orchids into cultural groupings _per book_. Work backwards: determine your growing conditions (temps, humidity, light) and post to this group re "what genera?"
