Humidity trays
Question:
Very well said!I agree a hundred 100%.I wish for all the ‘goodies’that I can’t afford, but I still keeping buying more and making room! I dislike snobs of all type, orchid snobs are just as bad. Happy growing[be it window sill,or greenhouse]!
Response:
A Den was labeled as a Oncidium, etc. That seems worse than nothing I’m afraid. Scale aplenty, though dead… -Rod so they weren’t even labeled correctly? wonderful! Just was in the grocery store today and found dens–phal type–with labels–but who’s to know if they are correct? one good thing buying from a grower with catalogue/photos–you know what the flower "should" look like. trouble is, even those plants sometimes have the wrong tag or are mis-identified. good case for buying plants in bloom.
Right, Audrey. They weren’t even close. I’ve seen piles of tags sitting on floors, though not recently. BTW, I can’t remember the last time someone contacted us to say that a plant purchased from us was misidentified. -Rod- Venger’s Orchids Website http://www.vengers.com/ Basic Culture CD-ROM: http://vengers.com/demo/cd.htm

I got into this situation a few years ago when I bought a little Cattleya in a net bag for my grandfather’s birthday. he tied it to a tree in the backyard and it produced the loveliest lavender and purple "prom corsage" flowers! It was tied bare root to an orange tree with rough bark and the only thing he did was fertilize it with manure and water. he is gone now–but the plant lives on! when the tree died, we cut down the tree and saved the section with the orchid–now blooming in my dad’s collection. little Sun Bulb no-name! Audrey
Hello Audrey, I don’t suppose you have a pic of this orchid somewhere on the web do you? I would love to see it. CJ Nash

Hey Audrey, A few weeks ago I was out at one of the stores and noticed tags as well. I was pretty surprised as historically they didn’t have them. Audrey – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Seems that this thread has forgotten something that has been a hallmark of this newsgroup. This newsgroup is filled with wonderful people full of lots great experience. Most people here don’t call people " Morons" for buying plants at "Supermarkets" or tell people that what they are doing is impossible. The advice here is wonderful and I wish that I had the money for a greenhouse, and special lights and Wardian cases, I wish I lived somewhere that would let me use a humidifyer, but I don’t. Someday I will. I have been growing orchids in my bedroom window with humidity trays, grow bulbs, and a cheap fountain I bought on sale at target for 3 years now. I am nowhere near an expert, but my orchids bloom and are very happy. This newsgroup has been a God sent to me because of all the great experience and good advice, but when I do have all those luxuries for my orchids that I can’t afford now I will remember that there are other people who still buy orchids in Lowe’s, Home Depot or just the local supermarket, and all they have is what I have now. I hope when I get to that point I am reminded of this if I forget. Thanks to all you orchid nuts out there and keep sending in the good info. *G* Thanks for listening.
