Please help

Question:

I recently rescued two large orchids for $5.00 each from a certain death  at an estate sale.  No idea what they are, except they are large and look healthy.  They are falling out of the pots, and I don’t know the first thing about Orchids, except when there is an orchid show I go to it and have seen a table where they repot orchids for people.  Can some one direct me to a beginner’s book, online page, or some other place where I can get some help.  Both have new sprouts coming. Thanks.

Laurel, the folks who repot orchids can probably identify (or narrow down) the genera of your plant . . .                 as for beginner’s books, think of it as a reference book as you’ll be referring back to it as long as you grow orchids. Look for chapters on "types", "general requirements", "potting", "pests" . . . there are many on the market, both in & out of print. Since the data in them is essentially the same, shop by price, photo-content, etc. You should be _pleased_ with the book as well as the orchids! Orchid books are available from us (of course) as well as other on-line sources. The growing popularity of orchids is causing more chain and independent dealers to stock basic titles as well. This is your first orchid? It won’t be your last . . . . -Bob BOTANA

Laurel,   If there is an orchid show in your area, there must be an orchid club.  If you could attend some meetings, you will find people who will help you get started with your orchids as well as direct you to sources of potting materials, fertilizers, pest control and offer practical advice on identifying your orchids, caring for your orchids in your home and making them bloom.   You will soon have more orchids, since you will probably have to divide those that are ‘falling out of their pots’,.   In an orchid club you could trade them for other people’s divisions. Have fun!   /Carroll

Dear Laurel:  The best beginner’s book I know of is the Ortho "All About Growing Orchids" which I see for sale at Home Depot and other garden centers.  It got me thru my early years, and even to this day I refer to it from time to time.  But the advice about finding a local society–and thus local experts–is the best of all.
