Chocolate scented orchids
Question:
Saw a show on HGTV suggesting giving chocolate scented orchids instead of Godiva. What’s the name of this orchid? Bloom season? etc.
There are several orchids that have a chocolate-like scent. The most popular is Oncidium Sharry Baby, often available for purchase at Home Depot stores in the summertime. You should be able to find growers with them at other times of the year. Another orchid known for its chocolate scent is Encyclia phoenicia an Encyclia species from Cuba. It’s progeny, Epidendrum Lorraine Smith (Enc. phoenicia x Enc. tampensis) is often chocolate-scented as well. In fact, there are naturally occuring E. tampensis in southern FL that have chocolate-scented flowers believed to be from having phoenicia in the "bloodline". There is a species of Catasetum (don’t recall off-hand) that has a fragrance of chocolate-mint as well. — Prem Programmer, graphic designer/animator, orchid and fossil nut extraordinaire… Official DNRC Title: Minister of Lightwave 3d Plugin Design Foolishness Lightwave Plugins – http://www.PremDesign.com/ppp.html Home – (fossils&graphics included) http://www.PremDesign.com "I get so distracted by the bigger things Show me the importance of the simple things, Like a word, a seed, a thorn, a nail, and a cup of cold water" – "The Power of a Moment" Chris Rice

Being a chocoholic, one of my favorite orchids is Onc. Sherry Baby ‘Sweet Fragrance’ AM/AOS. It is in bloom now & usually lasts 6-8 weeks! The flowers are a combination of white & a red-brown – very attractive. I t is easy to grow & flower in South Florida. I have had many compliments on this plant . Good luck.

Hi John! That would be one of my favorites, Oncidium Sharry Baby ‘Sweet Fragrance’. Anyone can tell you, the scent of these 1-inch burgundy flowers is better’n ANY chocolate! Mmmm.. And the bloom spike on a mature plant can be several feet long… Awesome! I have some, one blooming sized that will flower this summer. I’ll bet they bloom more than once a year, but haven’t done so with mine yet. Good Luck. They are plentiful as you will see when you do a search on the name. The most common one is Onc. Sharry Baby ‘Sweet Fragrance’ AM/AOS. The heaviest blooming is in the fall, but mature plants can bloom just about anytime. Kenni F.
