Is this common?

Question:

Hey Jim! Odd……. the plant that I have looks very similar to the one you have which is blooming oddly. Called Den. Sweet Lynn. It is a bugger to photograph because of the deep Merlot color, but in bright light it looks the color of your pictures. Things are really "squinty" here today (overcast with bright sun) so its hard for me to get a total accurate color representation. But I’ll post the picts over on alt.binaries.pictures.gardens. Maybe we can give your oddity a name. ;-)

That’s an accurate description of the color of mine.  The only reason I was conjecturing "Bigibbum" was from the listing in the Pridgeon book, "Illustrated Encyclopedia of Orchids", which showed a fairly deeply colored flower on page 89 and describes it as "quite purplish". I haven’t started to check other sources yet, and your input is quite helpful!  Thanks! — Jim — jmedgar3(at)earthlink(dot)net Orchid Pix & such: http://home.earthlink.net/~jmedgar3/OrchidMain.html

Response:

Dend bloom in the middle of the spike… completely upside down. Lip at the top. Rest are normal. It is causing me to be uncharacteristically superstitious. Crystal

Just had a Dend that bloomed in the middle of the spike, but was upright – however, the spike which was on a separate stalk had at least 3 or 4 of 9 blooms upside down… Two pages of Notes & pix: http://home.earthlink.net/~jmedgar3/Orchid009.html Based on its color, I’m thinking it’s a Dend. "Bigibbum". Of course – I managed to snap off the spike yesterday – see separate post…
