Is this Phal Crown Rot ?
Question:
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, I am a newbie. March 1st I bought a very nice Phal at Costco, it was in a 6" pot, had three spikes that were loaded with flowers for about 3 months. I have already cut off two of them and the third has just one flower left so it will be cut soon too. I think it may actually be two separate plants perhaps. The plant looks very healthy and the leaves are pretty healthy looking, solid green. I just touched one of the big leaves and it fell right off, I noticed where it was previously attached to the "base" of the plant right above the media, it was mush. The other two leaves that were there than also fell off. No I have what looks like one plant that is still fine, but the other one, there is just the "base" and the roots left. Is this crown rot? What to do ? Have I been overwatering ? —
I have a problem with the leaves as well, but almost the opposite symptoms. The leaves are all wrinkled and limp, but hanging on for dear life…? I don’t think I should cut them off, but they really look bad.

The following link offers a bit of the collected wisdom of this newsgroup, as well as my personal experience with rot diseases in Phals. http://www.orchidexchange.com/Photos/stemrot.htm You may find it helpful. It is not meant as a last word or to end all discussion. Rot diseases are very common in Phals. Usually new growers are exposed to them shortly after they are bitten by the orchid collecting bug and have started to collect. Rot diseases work quickly. You will need to work quickly too.
