native orchids
Question:
Hello All, I was wondering if anyone knows a reputable dealer on the www or elsewhere that carries orchids native to the US. I would prefer ones native to the south, but any legal US natives will do. There is some one in Iowa that specialized in Cipripeiums. His E mail starts with slipper… and I don’t remember the rest, and his last name starts with White… Sorry for not being of more help. You may find him by searching for orchids with any of the search engins and read on down the list. You will get some 6000 articles but I am sure he will show up among the first 100. This is how I found him. Be advised that ALL of OUR orchids are ENDANGERED! As much as I know it is not clear why. Some suggest that the population of wild bees in America has never recovered after the DDT devastation of the 50’s and 60’s. Various other hypotheses have been suggested that may or may not be true, but it is undoubtadly true that OUR orchids are in trouble. So be sure to buy orchids from a reputable source. Also, keep in mind that our orchids are terrestrial and are very difficult to grow. Some of the species (I don’t remember which) have never been grown in culture. Therefore, efforts to recover and restablish the orchid populations are very slow. Some volunteers are pollinating individual flowers in their wild surroundings, one flower at a time. And back to that Mr. White..something, he will have plants for sale only in the fall. Good luck to you and I hope that you will succeed in your effort.

[SNIP} The gentleman's name is Whitlow - Carson Whitlow. He runs a www site known as the Orchid Mall with _many_ links to other orchid sites, commercial and educational/informational. He does sell some native orchids. There are others who sell native orchids as well. He also tries to disseminate accurate information regarding the culture of North American Native Orchids, some of which are nearly impossible to cultivate artificially, especially out of their native range, others are relatively easy to cultivate. The URL is: http://www.netins.net/showcase/novacon/cyphaven/chorcmal.htm Hope this is of some use. Marquis Marquis Z.
