Orchids in Pittsburgh
Question:
I am looking for Orchid activities in Pittsburgh (Shopping, viewing). I have been to the Phipps, Is there anything else? Thx- M
Response:
The local society is probably your best bet (unfortunately, I no longer have any contact info:( ) However, if you can wait it out, Phipps has a nice show/sale in the Spring and the local society has their show in Shadyside at the "Pgh. Garden Center" (on Shady Ave. almost at the corner of 5th — again I think those are the street names…haven’t been there in over a year:( ). The latter is actually a garden show held over Mother’s Day weekend but you’ll see some nice plants for sale. The society also has an annual show and sale in the spring at the Shadyside area garden center. So, if you live in Squirrel Hill or Shadyside, all these events will be very convenient for you:) Wish I had more specifics! Write me if you feel you need more specific info…I may be able to dig some up:) — Mary – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am looking for Orchid activities in Pittsburgh (Shopping, viewing). Phipps has a very nice Orchid room all the time. Starting on January 16th 1999 they are having an Orchid Exhibit, Orchids Through The Ages. I think it runs through mid March. The Orchid Society or Western PA usually has a show and sale at the Pgh. Center for the Arts in Shadyside sometime in March. I think March 23-24 this year(I’m not 100% sure of this date). I purchased a Phal in bloom at the March ‘98 show and the last bloom finally fell off in mid October. I got to enjoy the blooms for 7 MONTHS!!
There are 2 growers I visit in the Pgh area. One is Devine Orchids on Middle Road in Glenshaw(kinda near Hartwood acres). The other is Orchids For Occasions. A guy grows orchids out of a small greenhouse in his yard. I can’t recall the address but he is in Monroeville or Murrysville on that road that goes past CCAC Boyce Campus. Home Depot usually has a nice selection of orchids. Also check out Giant Eagle stores a week or 2 before the big flower giving holidays(Valentines Day, Mothers Day, etc..). Both have VERY reasonable prices. If you have any other questions feel free to e-mail me and/or post in this newsgroup. Happy growing everyone….. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am looking for Orchid activities in Pittsburgh (Shopping, viewing). I have been to the Phipps, Is there anything else? Thx- M

I guess it has been a while since I have been to Devine Orchids. I knew the property was for sale but was not aware that it was finally sold. As I recall the original asking price was unrealistic. I kinda figured she didn’t really want to sell. Thanks for the info. You saved me a trip out there. Do you know what the new owners are using the greenhouses for? Maybe Orchids? :-) Scott – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The word I got last fall was that Devine Orchids is no longer in business:( — Mary Phipps has a very nice Orchid room all the time. Just a correction: Devine Orchids has gone out of the orchid business in Pittsburgh. The greenhouses are still there but the new owners are not into orchids at all. The second reference is to Orchids for All Occasions. It is run by a very nice guy, Jack Stakel. Address is 9015 Saltsburg Rd. 412 793-5979. Zuma Canyon is supposed to start an orchid greenhouse in Pittsburgh, but I’m not sure when. Another very active grower here is Nick Solomon in Natrona Heights 412 or(724( 224-6421). Many orchid enthusiasts purchase plants at the monthly meeting of the local orchid society, either from the invited speakers, or other members who bring in extra plants. Charles VanDyke
