How to plant Arundinas
Question:
Hi, My parents went to Hawaii and asked them to bring back any kind of orchid for me. They brought back a couple canes marked Bamboo Orchid which I researched and learned are Arundinas…I read that they are terrestrials and not epiphytes like my other orchids…. Can someone provide planting info for Arundinas. What mix to use? What type of Pot?
Dirt. They like to be potted in dirt. I would recommend buying some off-the- shelf potting soil mix and some perlite…mix until you get a fairly well- draining mix. Most of the off-the-shelf potting soils are extremely moisture retentive and peaty…so the perlite is necessary to keep from planting your plants in mud. I would recommend a reasonably large pot…give it at least a 2-3 inch berth on all sides from the plants…they tend to produce a lot of basal growths that travel a little before coming up…so they will fill a large pot rather quickly. As the plant increases in number of growths, put in bigger pots as necessary. — Prem Programmer, graphic designer/animator, orchid and fossil nut extraordinaire… Official DNRC Title: Minister of Lightwave 3d Plugin Design Foolishness Lightwave Plugins – http://www.PremDesign.com/ppp.html Home – (fossils&graphics included) http://www.PremDesign.com "We exist to proactively supply emerging materials to allow us to interactively coordinate economically sound opportunities for 100% customer satisfaction"

Hi, My parents went to Hawaii and asked them to bring back any kind of orchid for me. They brought back a couple canes marked Bamboo Orchid which I researched and learned are Arundinas. They said one is sprouting a leaf so I know at least one is alive. They’ll be bringing them in a few days and I’ll have to plant them. I read that they are terrestrials and not epiphytes like my other orchids. I found some culture infor on light and temperature but I need to know what to plant them in. Can someone provide planting info for Arundinas. What mix to use? What type of Pot? I’d like to stick with materials I can get at the local garden center instead of priprietary mix products I’d have to mail-order. I have generic fir-bark-based orchid mix (I could sift this to get anything from fine shreds to larger chucks), perlite, and lava rock and can get things like sphagnum peat, peat moss, etc. at the local garden center. Any help appreciated, Ken
