orchid jello
Question:
Heh. -snip- Seems as if Ebay couldn’t have cared less. They got their $2.25 after all. -Rod-
Rod, you know as well as we do that the $2.25 is not the point; courtesy and respect regarding the venues of others on the internet is the issue. Spam is an intrusion within newsgroups, jello is an intrusion into auction groups. e-Bay didn’t care??? _This_ statement is from the e-Bay staff-on-duty: "…another auction that will be stopped…can’t blame them for trying…It’s amazing…."
Amazing indeed (I got curious and went and read the thread in e-Bay’s cafe forum). e-Bay aint for jello, newsgroups aint for spam. Your seedling and your CD auctions are appropriate. It’s common sense, Rod. My freshman "Ethics in Philosophy" students couldn’t even find anything to debate in this . . . . Bob/BOTANA

Heh. It would also seem they they bent the truth just a little when needed. Advertising? Nope. The link went to the WC article and nowhere else. Nothing was being sold under the guise of being free. In fact, I have not made one single penny from it. What I did do is spread the word about water culture. Not one email complaint has been received. Promote my business? Again, no. The link goes to the WC article and nowhere else. Sales pitch? Think again. Nothing is being sold and the "auction" plainly states that. Abuse of ebay? Probably. But they got paid for it. Fraud? Better not come here and attach his name to such a statement without SOME evidence that I was posting misleading information. Fact is, the header plainly states "Orchids – Don’t bid on me!" Moderator of the group? I don’t think so. "Abuses with the signature"? Sig files are specifically provided for in netiquette. When you dissect the purported statements, you actually find very little fact at all. As it happens, the "auction" ended normally after it’s 7 days had expired. Seems as if Ebay couldn’t have cared less. They got their $2.25 after all. -Rod- Venger’s Orchids Website http://www.vengers.com/ Basic Culture CD-ROM: http://vengers.com/demo/cd.htm

So Bob, how’s things in Cheeseland? Personally, I don’t know what jello is or isn’t, and don’t care what Rob does or doesn’t post where, or as whom. He’s helped me here in the past, and I’m grateful to him for it, as I am to others. I take what I need from here and leave the rest, mostly without comment. It ain’t religion, folks. Call me what you will (and someone prolly will, once I announce it), I keep my e-mail address strictly private on the NG’s to avoid both SPAM and comments that folks would "rather not" make in public (as it’s been my experience that there’s often a reason for that). IMHO, everybody’d get along a lot better if they just kept NG issues and conversations in the public eye, where people tend to behave. Hate to see it this go on in what I only know as a nice helpful group. Enjoy your holidays. Response:
Hi, http://www.ebay.com It is a place on the web to buy and sell things…by bidding for them. This morning a search on the term ‘orchids’ produced a list of 51 items, although without closer inspection this list looked mostly like a collection of books and arts on the theme — I don’t think I saw any ‘real’ orchids when I glanced the list. -Al Zone 10 in my basement. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – What a hoot. :-) I am going straight to ebay… …What is "ebay"?

Since this is my first day in this newsgroup, I feel I should apologize for my presumption to post. However, this thread got my attention as I am so very new to orchids and thought "orchid jello" might be some mysterious new growing medium. Once I understood the reference, I thought my recent experience might give some perspective. Three weeks ago…and totally "orchidless"…I saw this same offering on Ebay. I decided to investigate…read the cultural information…was very intrigued…started researching orchids on the Web…opened a new folder in ‘Favorites’ for "Orchids"…shared what I was learning with my sister and a co-worker…got them intrigued as well. Because of this one Ebay offering, there are now three new orchid hobbyists providing windowshelf space for ten beautiful "babies" purchased from a poster to this group. My personal collection now numbers seven…my share of four from the initial purchase plus three more from a source who advertised in the classifieds at The Orchid Mall. Another two plants are on their way to me from two other sources. Two of my plants are being water-cultured and seem to be loving it. I recognize names in this forum because I have visited your websites and have found every one of them to be beautiful, educational and enthralling. I now realize that "orchid jello" is INDEED a new growing medium – perhaps not for my plants, but for me as my interest in and knowledge of orchids continues to grow a bit more each day. So, don’t be so quick to scoff about where another plants his "seeds". Amazing things can grow in the most unlikely places. Thank you, Jaye

Hi Jaye, Interesting indeed
I’m glad that WC at least gave you a small push to give the hobby a try. Or is hook, line and sinker, now?
Maybe I should be posting a disclaimer that Orchids can be habit forming? Anyhow, welcome to the hobby. Holler if we can be of any help. -Rod- Venger’s Orchids Website http://www.vengers.com/ Basic Culture CD-ROM: http://vengers.com/demo/cd.htm

Did you know that you can grow Orchids in nothing but water? In a glass jar? I’m giving this information to you…No sales pitch, no catch… In 1995 someone asked me how much water a certain type of Orchid could tolerate. I wasn’t sure so decided to experiment a little and in the last 3 years have discovered that Orchids will grow roots able to adapt to their conditions. While Orchid roots in a pot are prone to fungal diseases in the presence of too much water, causing the roots to rot away, roots grown in water are not! In many cases these water cultured plants will grow better than their potted cousins. So here it is: http://vengers.com/culture/water.htm Everything you need to know is right there. Literally hundreds of Orchid enthusiasts have been trying my method, and this paper has been printed in dozens of Orchid society newsletters around the world. Read it over if it interests you.
