(Orchid) Places in London?
Question:
I am going to London in February with my husband. What places of (Orchid) interest should I try to squeeze into the trip? (I know it is not kind to drag him along into each and every greenhouse I find, but it is my birthday and he has promised to be good about it. ) Cissi

Don’t miss The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Hi! Not to contradict what RetiredCBK has just written about Kew Gardens in London, but I was there a week ago and I have been really dissapointed with their orchid display. They only had a few paph wardii, cymbidiums, oncidium hybrids and phal… I know they’re supposed to have a great orchid collection but at that particular time of the year, nothing was really worth the trip! They have great conservatories though with tons of palm trees and exotic giant ferns worth seeing. Have a great trip! Jocelyn

I agree. I was in London and went to Kew Gardens at the end of November/early December expecting to find an orchid display. I could not find one. (I have more orchids than I could find at Kew!!!) When I asked, they said they don’t have many at this time of year (which was an understatement) BUT they are going to have an orchid show early 2000 – they could have said in Feb or Mar and then they would have a lot of orchids on display. I didn’t pay a lot of attention to when because I knew I wouldn’t be there, but if I recall correctly it was early in 2000. So you might want to check with Kew Gardens. You might get lucky and be there for the orchid show!!!! If not, then there’s still alot to see at Kew, but don’t get your hopes up about seeing a lot of orchids. I took the tube to Richmond and walked along the Thames to Kew Gardens. If you like that type of thing, I highly recommend it. You come out of the tube station at Richmond and go right towards Richmond Green and I believe the Richmond Bridge. You can get down to the tow path by the river around what I believe is the base of the bridge. I went through the Green (Richmond Green) down this little street which led to the river. This was a real nice change from the crowds and typical tourist attractions in downtown London. I walked for about 1-2 hours along the river to Kew Gardens. There was an entrance to the Gardens right by the river. The tow path is for the most part, not paved, so wear appropriate shoes. It was just a little muddy in parts. The walk from Richmond to Kew was one of the highlights of my trip. Have fun!!! M – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi! The real orchid house in Kew Garden is not open for public. The is the reason why so many people are disappointed with Kew Garden. You have to know somebody overthere to get into the orchid greenhouse. The Princess of Wales greenhouse just has few orchids.

Hhhhmmm… interesting… The web page mentions the Princess of Wales Conservatory and when I was there I had just gone through what I thought was the whole thing from top to bottom and didn’t see any. I could have just missed them. I still think the picture on the Web page is just a lit-tle misleading unless something’s changed from when I was there. Luckily I didn’t go to Kew looking for orchids. It was more of an afterthought after I got there, so I wasn’t very disappointed. I still enjoyed myself. The real orchid house in Kew Garden is not open for public.
