Where to buy Lady Bug?

Question:

                              The second problem with using them is that they tend to migrate off to where there is more food (a small package of ladybugs has somewhere in the thousands of individuals) unless it is cold enough to keep them where you put them (in which case your orchids have more than just pests to worry about).

regarding this problem, our local garden center recommended that you release them out of the bag at night; I guess they eat at night and move during the day time. this way you have at least one guaranteed night with them. —   ^-^    pixel:  DM BW H 2.4 X L++ W++ C– I+++ T+  E+++ H Q++ PL+++  /o o   pashmak:DM Bt G 2.4 X L   W   C– I+++ T++ E— H Q++ PL+ ===^===

:       Can you tell me where can I buy some lady bugs? They say that : these bugs are useful in many ways like killing the pest from orchid : leaves and also eats other pest in the garden or area. Do you know any : places here in California or somewhere close by? Are they cheap to buy? The places that I always seem to see ladybugs for sale are at garden centers. Check your local plant-places. As to their effectiveness, I can’t vouch for them as a great pest control method. Ladybugs feed on aphids (which I have almost never seen as a major orchid pest – although potatoe aphids can be nasty on orchids). They don’t (to my knowledge) feed on much of anything else. The second problem with using them is that they tend to migrate off to where there is more food (a small package of ladybugs has somewhere in the thousands of individuals) unless it is cold enough to keep them where you put them (in which case your orchids have more than just pests to worry about). Another problem occurs if you have a population of insectivorous plants – ladybugs seem to love pitcher plants, and the feeling is mutual. A population of ladybugs was released several years ago in the Botany Collections greenhouse here and within a few days the insectivore collection was plenty happy. Yes, they are cheap (I think that small package of several thousand insects was five or ten dollars). No, they are not worth it if you are growing a few orchids in the house or apartment. No, they aren’t worth it if you don’t have aphids. If you are growing in a greenhouse and you are interested in IPM (Integrated Pest Management – the practice of keeping a full ecosystem of insects to control the few pest species) then I suggest you find out who at your university is in charge of pest control in the university’s greenhouses and talk to him/her about starting IPM colonies. -J           Depth is often dark, but darkness is not often deep.
