CHAT: vanilla orchid growing in my office

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am growing one in my office at work. (very large sunny window) on a moss stick. (i helped start two last year from a fellow-worker who is a orchid nut -he would not mind my saying so!-so he gave me one of them) it has grown over a foot in the last couple of months (beautiful plant)  I have been told that they need to go horizontal to flower (still trying to figure out how to do this on my desk…) and then they need to be hand pollinated to produce the pods. ( i am willing to do this!). anyone else out there trying to do this crazy thing, please let me know anything you have learned (I spray the moss stick with a hand sprayer of water a couple of times a week, and so far am just giving it water to drink (it is in chips of some kind)i haven’t made it to the store to get orchid fertilizer yet). I have tried to enlist my coworkers help, telling them i will support our company (unnamed) with the proceeds, but no takers so far… Maura, Boulder Creek, CA, n. of santa cruz, sunset zone 15

I think the main problem you’ll run into is size…mature vanillas are at least 30-feet long before flowering.  Otherwise, it sounds like it’s doing OK. Gary

Response:

Anyone there know where actually to get vanilla orchid plants?  I had one once years ago (given to me) but it rotted. . . .
