NIGHTBLOOMERS

Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – ANyone have any suggestions of evening and night blooming plants?  I know of Datura, Moonflowers, night water lilies.  Any others?  Many thanks. Cestrum nocturnum, or night-blooming jasmine, is a great plant and one the most heavily fragrant plants known.  One single plant in full bloom will pervade an entire yard with an intoxicating fragrance. This plant is shrub-like, and easily grown from seeds started early indoors (seeds available from The Fragrant Path or J.L Hudson), or just buy cuttings (available from Logee’s, Plumeria People, others).  In the southeast, at least along the coast, it is fairly easy to find in nurseries.  Although it is probably perrenial in truly warm climates (Fl, CA), I treat it as an annual in zone 7.  It could probably be grown anywhere with an ample supply of summer warmth and humidity. We planted a box of birdhouse gourds. The large, white flowers usually open in the evening. But they do take up a lot of room. Maybe you could use them as a ground cover in your moonlight garden with the taller night bloomers emerging from the vines.

There are several orchid plants which of course are open during the day AND night, but put out delicious fragrances at night.  Angraceum sesquipedalum is one, Oncidium ’shari baby’ smells like chocolate, and there is a Cattleya which smells like lemons.  In fact there are numerous orchids which were meant to be pollinated at night by moths so they look beautiful in addition to smelling good at night.  For a specific list of them, you might try posting to rec.gardens.orchid Jordanne – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – : ANyone have any suggestions of evening and night blooming plants?  I : know of Datura, Moonflowers, night water lilies.  Any others?  Many : thanks. Hi Norman, Evening-scented Stocks(Mathiola bicornis) are heavenly, so are white petunias after the sun goes down(!) White phlox, too. Nicotiana sylvestris, alata and llangsdorfii are all night-fragrant, forget the "nicky" and "Domino" series- they have no fragrance. Clethra alternifolia(Summersweet, a native US shrub) is fragrant day and night; another native shrub, Fothergilla, has night-fragrant white blossoms too.White Alyssum smells like a pot of honey day and night. There is a species of Hemerocallis that is a night bloomer, but I don’t know the specific name, sorry. Check with a Daylilly specialist like Wild’s. Good luck Polly M. Norman: Try nicotiana sylvestris, four o’clocks, oenothera in var. blooms at dusk, and several cestrum varieties, especially cestrum nocturnum bloom at night and smell heavenly. There is also an interesting book on evening gardening available in paperback by Peter Loewer, I believe. Good luck, Lyn

I just obtained a plant called Night Flox (I don’t have my Sunset Garden Book handy at the moment or I would give you the scientific name). It is not the same as regular phlox at all and is sometimes referred to as Night Candy. It has an incredible smell that is hard to describe that eminates from small, very interesting, white flowers that open at dusk. The scientific name begins with a ‘z’ and sounds Russian to me. Hope this helps.

Jeff: The name is zaluzianskya! A mouthful, and deinately Russian sounding! It drives me crazy to know I know the name of something and can’t get it off the tip of my tongue!! The smell is awesome, and only at night. How right you are! Lyn

It is if you get the species, but the modern cultivars have little or no scent and bloom mostly in the day. They do tend to be more flor- iferous and are available in more colors though. Rand

Get Cereus. These large cacti are night bloomers. You need a warm climate or lots of room indoors, though. Night flowering catchfly (Silene noctiflora) is another night bloomer. Regards, Bill — Bill Morgan Center for Room Temperature Confusion
