30 hours in Singapore — what to see?
Question:
We have a 30-hour layover in Singapore on our way to Delhi. We like shopping in local markets and bazaars, visiting religious sites, and attending festivals. What recommendations do you have? We will be there in late October. Thanks in advance, Nancy
Response:
If these are the things that you like to do then I suggest visiting both China town and Little India. You’ll get plenty of shopping and you will see some of the religious sites. If you’d like to see other things I can highly recommend the zoo and the bird park. We have a 30-hour layover in Singapore on our way to Delhi. Why waste time ? For Chinese or Indian culture, even Iceland beats Singapore hands down. However if you really MUST visit Singapore, then I suggest booking ahead for tickets to view the public whipping of juveniles and foreigners caught working illegally. Takes place every Friday. Ringside seats go for more than $100, unless of course you have connections with the ruling regime… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – If these are the things that you like to do then I suggest visiting both China town and Little India. They should have beaten you a little harder, Hong Tin. I’d have paid $200 for the chance to apply one strike with the cane. I’ll have to call my friends in the ruling regime.

Hi Nancy! Strongly consider the Night Safari… never heard any bad comments. The "all perfect" Lonely Planet has the details. e-mail me if you have any further questions. The zoo or the night safari is nice if you like animals. You can also try Chinatown or Little India for some local colour. If you like looking at markets, you can try the one at Chinatown or the Tekka market at little India. It would be quite a different experience. The wet markets are open only in the morning before lunch. You can also eat very cheaply at the hawker centre next to the market. If you like orchids, you can visit the Orchid enclosure at the Botanic Gardens.
Response:
These "wet markets" are named for the slippery floors and the foul-smelling water that drips from the fishmongers’ stalls. Bring plenty of smelling salts if you visit. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The zoo or the night safari is nice if you like animals.
