Botanical Gardens?
Question:
I agree with Lewis Ginter in Richmond. Also, if you have time for a slight detour off I-95, go to the Raleigh-Durham area and visit the NC Botanical Gardens and the Duke Gardens. —
Response:
And visit the NC State University Arboretum in Raleigh, NC. You might want to check out the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. We were there in April and found the sidetrip well worthwhile!

If you have some time while in Florida, you might spend a day to drive to Orlando, only about an hour and a half from Daytona Beach. The Charles P. Leu Gardens are wonderful and have the largest collection of camelias in the world. They also have a nice collection of bromeliads and orchids. Calloway Gardens outside Atlanta is the setting of the "southern vegetable garden" on the PBS Victory Garden show. I’m not sure if it has a conservatory, but my friends from Georgia rave about it. I agree with other responses that Longwood is a must-see. It’s my favorite botanical garden ever. –Carol Brandt

Unfortunately, we’re pretty doggoned far from I-95! But, I would have to say that, if you DO decide to come toward Atlanta on your trip, it is a pretty good place. And, if you come this way, you SHOULD go to Callaway Gardens (even further from I-95). KK KELLY W. KENION Financial Data Technology

My family and I will be driving from Rochester, NY to Daytona Beach, FL this August. We will be cutting through New York and Pennsylvania, but mostly following I95 after Washington, DC. Can anyone recommend any botanical gradens and/or commercial greenhouses which would be worth touring along the way?
If you hatime for another non-tropical garden, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, VA is a delightful little stop. Great perennial garden, formal garden (with restored mansion to tour), great collection of pitcher plants, VA natives, and children’s/educational garden. It’s small enough to do in a few hours, and good enough to stop for, especially since it’s about 5 minutes off of I-95, just north of Richmond. Drop me a line if you’re interested, and I’ll give you more details/directions. Dustin (but really Ashland, VA)

Sorry to hear you will be bypassing Wash, DC. Should you change your mind, the U.S. Botanical Garden (on the Mall on the west side of the Capitol building) is a must. Tropicals are their specialty (especially palms). They also have a "dinosaur garden" that is very popular with kids–plants that were around when the dinosaurs were. Helps kids envision the kind of landscape their favorite animals were eating/crashing around through. If you want to avoid the hassles of downtown, you could always park at one of the outlying Metro (subway) stations off I-95 and ride into the city. Might make a nice afternoon’s change from driving. Longwood Gardens, in Kennett Square, PA (near where Rtes 1 and 202 meet) is a must for your itinerary. They have several tropical houses, including one that was designed by Roberto Burle Marx and Conrad Hamerman about 3 years ago. One of the other tropical houses also has a number of rainforest plants that Roberto discovered. They also have a nice heath and heather collection that should be at its peak when you make your trip. Plan to spend an entire day; it’s well worth it. Just a little bit South is Winterthur, near Wilmington, DE. Also quite nice, but strictly an outdoor landscape, no tropicals. -a.r.t.

We will be AVOIDING Washinton, DC and I don’t want to get involved in any major traffic jams unless the place is really special. By the way, I know that the idea of driving from Rochester to Daytona Beach in August with kids is insane, but my parents were insane too. — Jeffrey Snyder Eastman Kodak Company (716)477-6385
