Question:
c cAs a beginner to the world of orchids and to this computer-I have been creading these postings and getting a lot of useful information. My cunderstanding is that this listing is for the purpose of asking and canswering questions about orchids and their culture. For most cquestions, there seems to be no ONE right or wrong answer. What works cfor me here in deep South Texas may be a complete opposite as to what cwill work in Canada. I believe that is what makes these listings so cinteresting. "Differences in Opinion" are to be expected and in fact cis more than one way to skin a cat? Thanks for listening-Patricia. Hi Patricia, You’re 100% correct. -Rod- Rod & Susan Venger, Venger’s Orchids Homepage address http://www.usa.net/venger/ Listings Available – Email us for your copies Order Line 1-800-483-6437 —

Quite often when people ask questions I answer by e-mail to not clutter up this posting. If the sense of most of the people who read this would rather see answers from several of us here I would be most happy to post here. I have always had the feeling that this has been sort of a page moderated by Rod and other opinions were not always welcome. What say the group about how answers should be posted? Buzz
The more answers on the newsgroup, the merrier I’ll be! Hilary

Buzz, you obviously have no idea how your unwarranted childish personal attacks are viewed by the folks out here on the net, so I will fill you in.
Buzz, don’t worry about it. I was put on one of the elite’s kill list without being told. I have no idea why, because I’ve tried to always be polite, helpful, and appreciative. After a few minutes of rage, I realized how little it really mattered to me. At least you know the reason. ….BILL William J DeLong Nicholasville, KY

I myself would love to see all the answers posted on this group. Since not all of us are experts in orchids, we still have a lot to learn. Reading other people’s questions and answers is the best way of learning about orchids. And yet, by reading some of Rod’s (Venger Orchids) answers to other questioners, I was able to save about 20 of my orchids from dehydration! (Thanks, Rod!) -VD-

their say. This is a public forum. To answer someone privately is your choice if you wish to do so, but in the doing no one else learns. And learning IS the point of all this. -Rod-
. If you’re sure your answer is either in a FAQ or of interest to no one else, you should certainly reply privately, but if other people want answers to the same question, they’ll have to ask everyone the same question again if the reply isn’t public. Or they might think no one even knows. Personally, I don’t come here to see a list of question, and then leave wondering whether anyone knows the answers. So I think we’d be better off with some more answers being posted publicly. —

b bThis sort of pompous lecturing is precisely what causes many of us to banswer things privately. bBuzz I’ve worked extremely hard to get where I am on the internet. I’m here every single day and I’ve EARNED whatever opinions, good or bad, that the users have of me. I will not apologize to you for my efforts. As far as I’m concerned, the subject is closed with absolutely nothing changed except for more bad blood between you and I. Was it worth it? I for one very much appreciate the folks who take time out to answer questions by posting and through e-mail. I’ve tried not to abuse the privilege, but Lord, yea verily I am a newbie and I am often lost. We see the same sort of activity and comments in other newsgroups I frequent, like rec.antiques, where perhaps one question in 50 is actually answered and people assume that since they’re paying for their net access, they’re entitled to a response. rec.gardens.orchids is a cornucopia of information and civility by comparison. Since I know from experience that maintaining a high profile gets you shot at, I am all the more appreciative of the time that Rod, Rob and others spend helping out. I’ve picked up some tips here that probably seem hopelessly basic to some (like giving the dendrobiums a rest in winter) but I never would have figured out on my own. And if you’ll allow me a moment of newbie awe, who would have thought that you’d get new growth on a plant by not watering it for two months? This still blows me away. So this is a simple "Thanks, guys!" Charleen — antiques and collectibles for sale… URL: http://www.diadem.com

I don’t know if I would say the rgroup was being moderated by Rod, although he does post more often rthan anybody else (and thank you, Rod, for your efforts). I try to rrespond to questions if I know the answers, and if I haven’t gotten rtired of answering the same questions over and over again. To that rpoint, is it possible to start a FAQ for this group, if it hasn’t alread ry been done? I remember some talk of doing this in the past, but I rdon’t know if it ever happened. I wouldn’t mind a copy, just so I can rforward it to people rather than writing the same thing over and over ragain. As for posting answers, questions of general interest rshould always be followed up on the net. Questions of specific rinterest are probably best left to e-mail. As for the daily "I am rkilling my Phal" questions, that is probably best addressed by rdirecting the inquirant to the FAQ (assuming it exists). If it does rexist, it is not unreasonable to post the FAQ once a month or so, this ris done on other newsgroups and seems to cut down on the clutter quite ra bit. I am willing to take the responsibility of posting the FAQ on ra regular basis, if I can get a copy in my machine. Hi Rob, There is a FAQ out there, but I don’t recall who has it. Word has it that Aaron Hicks is going back to school so perhaps he will take on the project again. The trouble with a FAQ though is that it can’t possibly cover every situation. The daily "I’m killing my Phal" questions don’t neccesarily have the same solutions..different causes, different growing conditions, etc., so these types of questions really seem to require more rather than less attention. I think too that sending a "form" may make some of these people feel less welcome here than a personalized reply. And the more welcome they feel, the more apt they’ll be to take an active role in participating here in the future..maybe..:) -Rod- Snow and cold this week in Colorado Springs… Rod & Susan Venger, Venger’s Orchids Homepage address http://www.usa.net/venger/ Listings Available – Email us for your copies Order Line 1-800-483-6437 —

Every answer that could enhance the knowledge or expertiese of those who are in the shdows, reading and growing is to be appreciated and valid. We all know that various techniques and growing lessons can be demonstrated to work for some but not all specially not in all climates, light conditions, etc. Not only that, even the outrageous and experimental techniques do shed information that may eventually important to the survival of certain species. Besides, we need discussion an some reason to be on this net! /Tom Legbandt

If there’s an opinion that I strongly disagree with, I may say something if I think it’s important enough. I NEVER go out of my way to offend, and if you happen to see an answer that isn’t quite in line with your way of doing things, then maybe you should realize that there may be more than one answer to any given problem. Maybe you should have read my answer to Ingrid before posting. You would have found that I purposely do NOT answer some postings to allow others the chance to have their say. This is a public forum.
