Phal Recommendation
Question:
OH my! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Dyan, What’s your mother’s favorite color? And how much do you want to spend? Jim Actually her favorite color is part of the problem. She loves white flowers and has a large selection of white phals. Poor novice that I am I drive her nuts by not being able to tell them apart. She also tends towards deep pinks (red?). Actually she likes anything that is a bit out of the ordinary. I’m hoping to keep it under $100. Dyan Dyan, you’re going to kill me but Zuma Canyon in Malibu has a phal to die for, Its called Phal Spanish Dancer and its white with a pretty pink edging just around the borders of the petals and sepals. I spent $60 on mine, and it was in bloom in the summer (Yours might be different) Yay! I do have a pic on the web! http://members.wbs.net/homepages/k/b/b/kbbarrett/PhalSD.JPG The edging is pinker than the picture, my camera loses something in the translation of phal pinks! Hope you like it. K Barrett

I had NO idea there were so many colors. I had so much fun prowling around Odoms site that while I was ordering my mom’s present I went ahead and ordered 2 orchids for ME…..I think that the orchid bug seems to have bitten — dyan Walnut Creek., CA Zone 9/10 Sunset Zone 14
Well, Dyan, if the orchid bug has well and truly bitten please remember that the Diablo View Orchid Society meets the second Thursday of each month in the offices of the Contra Costa Water District, 1331 Concord Ave, Concord at 7:30 PM. This month (4/8) we will be discussing greenhouse construction and automation, but come for the ’show and tell’ table where members bring in their flowering plants. Some good cultural tidbits are tossed around, and you get to see new varieties of orchids. Hope to see you, Kathy Barrett (I showed you the picture of Phal Spanish Dancer)

Oops! I meant to send this to her privately [blush] pardon me! K Barrett

What a nice photo and what a pretty Phal. Since I’m not sure which white’s she currently has (and it seems there are more of them everyday), and I can’t get my hands on her plant list without her catching me I think I’ll pass the name on to her after her b-day…and let her get herself another white one. It would just not work getting her another white flowing plant right after I teased her so much. :-) dyan Walnut Creek., CA Zone 9/10 Sunset Zone 14 Look out for the spam trap. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Dyan, What’s your mother’s favorite color? Hi all… I’m getting ready to do some Birthday shopping for my mother (a confirmed Orchid addict) and would like to get her something fairly special. I’m a total novice and am looking for some suggestions. TIA. — dyan Walnut Creek., CA Zone 9/10 Sunset Zone 14 Look out for the spam trap.

Hi Dyan, I have two recommendations for you. First, check in with Odom’s Orchids and browse their page. They have pictures of many of their Phals, and prices as well. Their website address is: http://www.odoms.com. I’m very fond of white Phals, myself, but after you have a few, it’s nice to vary your collection. You might consider a nice yellow, such as a Lowland Gold; my personal recommendation would be a Doritaenopsis Firecracker. I bought one of the little plants at the Missouri Botanical Gardens Orchid Show about a month ago, and the first bloom just opened. It’s a deep fuschia and is about an inch and a half across. This is smaller than the blossoms most of my plants produce, and I have been told that this variety is a prolific bloomer (twice a year). Besides all this, it’s a neat plant. Odoms have it, too, I believe. Good luck. Jim
