Hi..Is there anyone who has a insect scale problem on there indoor orchid?
I used a soap wash and that helps awhile…Then there back? It is blooming
wonderful so need to be careful. All ideas appreciated. J.fr. Salem Scott D. Jung
I have only one orchid. That is why I never browse rec.gardens.orchids. I probably would not browse rec.gardens.edibles since all my edibles are also ornamental or fragrant.

I used Isopropyl Alcohol in a small mist bottle. It works very well but
you need to mist it every day for a while until the’re gone.= I learned this tip from an orchid grower. I haven’t noticed any ill
effects on the orchid using this method and it’s safe to do in = the house. Russ
I too, have heard of this method of control. I am also experimenting with systemics right now. So far the Dendrobiums like the systemic, the Epidendrums are responding well. The Phalenopsis don’t respond, but aren’ dying and the Oncidiums hate it (they aren’t doing well). Because of the trouble, I’ll probably stick with alcohol. However, the problem with misting, is that in the case of orchid (especially those growing in bark), scale can survive on the roots (which don’t get misted). CEL — zone 5/6 (and on occasion even seven) USDA, Western USA — intermountain reagion (meaning dry, dry, dry). It’s not always dry, where it’s dry. . .

All ideas appreciated. Sometimes it’s scale, and sometimes its mealy bugs. I have a phaleanopsis (sp?), which cannot get any water in the crown; otherwise, it will rot and die. I use a toothpick and scrape each bug individually. Once, I wet a cotton ball with malathion — just wet, not sopping. Then I put the ball onto the crown where a new leaf had jsut come out. It did not hurt the plant, but it did not stop the bugs either. I still do spray malathion on the other plants that are near the orchid.

Has anyone tried Horticultural Oil on Orchids? I find it invaluable – much better that Soap – on all my other inside and outside flowering plants. Only caution I had was to not use it more than once a week as it may burn. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Rubbing alcohol, applied carefully to each scale insect with a "Q-Tip" will control scale. It may take a while to see results, and of course the dead scale is there permanently. —

I grow orchids in the Florida Keys and they are completely exposed to outdoor conditions. My palm trees and some other plantings are loaded with scale. I had terrible problems with it on my orchids a while back. I now use Orthene WP at two teaspoons per gallon. It works great and no damage. One treatment is usually good for 90 days or more. When I used the liquid Orthene it didn’t work nearly as well. Bill B.

I use an aerosol acephate (Orthene). I’ve used it at the recommended 18" on flowering orchids, including Cattleya’s and Paphs. I think it includes orchids in its species list – u might check. James Aldridge – Fort Worth, Texas, USA http://rampages.onramp.net/~jaldr

They are all together in a north-facing greenhouse window in my breakfast room.
