Want a group for PONDS
Question:
I’m casting my vote for a group ‘rec.gardens.ponds’. Anyone else who’s interested please post a vote!
I would vote for a pond group. There is a wealth of pure pond ideas that need to to be concentrated in one notes file. morrie

: Add another YES vote for PONDS mee too water gardens, ponds, hydroponics etc are becoming increasingly popular as technology improves and equipment and supplys become more avialable and cheaper i’d compare it to the growth in saltwater aquariums over the past couple of decades

Right now, nothing. Both the .aquaria contingent and the .gardens contingent want a .ponds subgroup. I’ve been negotiating behind the scenes with various parties and have reached a consensus that plain old rec.ponds would be a more appropriate name, as a .ponds groups spans both groups pretty evenly. There’s a discussion going on in news.groups right now. When the times comes to vote on the group (still a few weeks away) you’ll receive an anouncement in this group, at which time you vote by emailing the vote taker, not by posting your vote to the net. An additional rationale for this is the idea that over the years rec.gardens can be considered to be an innapropriate top level group. Back in the early primordial soup of usenet and there was nothing except computer weenies, rec.gardens was a sensible choice, but I feel if we had to fo it today we might have done something like this: rec.plants.misc rec.plants.orchids rec.plants.bonsai rec.plants.gardens rec.plants.roses (which could, I suppose be rec.gardens.roses) and so on and maybe: sci.bio.plants To make bionet.plants more mainstream; sometimes bionet is a tough hierarchy to get. Instead the bonsai people are over in rec.arts.bonsai, and the orchid folks being in rec.gardens.orchids which always seemed to me to be a dubious name, as most orchids arn’t in gardens, they’re in greenhouses; even so rec.greenhouses.orchids doesnt seem any better

From this and other similar postings there certainly appears that there may be enough interest to create a new group on ponds/water gardening. Posting favorable votes to the rec.gardens group, however, will not get a new group formed. The guidelines for forming a new newsgroup are quite specific and can be found in news.announce.newusers as well as other sources. These guidelines include directions for conducting a formal discussion period and subsequent election. Please, I don’t mean this as a flame or criticism, but I don’t want folks to be misled into thinking that casting votes here will accomplish anything other than demonstrating support for the concept. If someone would generously volunteer to take the lead in this effort I think many of us would be willing to help her/him out as much as possible. Unfortunately I cannot be that volunteer at this time due to a combination of limited time and lack of adequate net knowledge & skills. If nobody else wants to "jump in" now I may be willing and able to give it a shot in a year or so, but not at this time unfortunately. In fact, I have already sent an RFD to the news.groups people and they told me to wait as they had received a similar RFD that was still on the drawing board. THAT WAS TWO MONTHS AGO!! I have "nagged" the News folks about letting us get on with things and I also posted the RFD here on rec.gardens for people to start voicing opinions. (Perhaps you didn’t see it?) I can re-post the "proposed RFD" if anyone’s interested. J. Wallis
