Well, Howdy all and Cattleya xhardyana…
Question:
CJM, They are in my flask catalog now. www.OrchidFlask.com Mick
Response:
In fact, in 1984, Selby Gardens made the same cross, in fact with aurea as the pod parent as well because at the time their warscewiczii ‘Frau Melanie Beyrodt’ was in decline. The first to bloom of the grex opened in June 1993, and were very, very nice. I only wish I could get one of those plants… CJM:) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Yes, I think that should make a very nice grex! Should lead to very nice whites with bold red lips. Any idea how long before those flasks are availiable? CJ Maciejeski Member: Houston Orchid Society Southwest Regional Orchid Growers’ Association Pleurothallid Alliance OrchidSafari Virtual Orchid Society CJM, For my Cattleya hardyana cross I used C aurea x C warscewiczii semi-alba Frau Melanie Beyrodt. I think that will be the "right" combination. Mick HBI, Producer of Fine Orchids in Flask www.OrchidFlask.com .

First point: Sorry, group, for my relative inactivity on RGO of late, but rest assured I am reading and will be participating more since High School is officially over and I am not preparing for any talks for the next month or two at least. Second point: Please note, I have a new e-mail address, those of you who should delete that address from your address books since that account will no longer exist as of July 31, 2001. Please send all further correspondence Third point: Okay, this is really the main reason I am writing to RGO tonight, in a request for help with a little project of mine. As many of you who know me know, I am first and foremost a species nut, and further, I have a special place in my heart for Cattleya species and natural hybrids. To that end, I have fallen especially in love with the delightful C. x hardyana hybrid swarm between C. warscewiczii (gigas Hort.) and the spectacular C. aurea. Despite the fact that this wonderful hybrid population produces truly fantastic flowers of an array of colors, as illustrated by 19th and early 20th century prints and paintings in various horticultural journals of the time, C x hardyana seems to have fallen through the cracks, so-to-speak. Very rarely does it ever show up for sale or is it seen at shows or in collections. I truly don’t understand why this is, but, the fact remains, it has become decidely rare, as has the aurea parent (I searched for two years before I found a true aurea), surprisingly. Perhaps in a zeal to restore this beauty to orchid collections, or perhaps in a typical state of masochistic boredom, I have decided to take on the task of breeding this population again. To that end, I need a bit of help from you all. If any of you know of sources for various color forms of C. warscewiczii, including albas, semialbas, particularly dark violets, and coeruleas, please feel free to inform me. Further, if any of you are willing to share pollen from varieties of C. warscewiczii, especially albas and semialbas, feel free to contact me. I have found it very easy to find lavendar clones of C. warscewiczii, but albas and semialbas are considerably harder to find. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
