Dead Stems?

Question:

I’m very new to orchids but have a fair amount of experience in other areas (roses; perennial herbs; veggies; etc.) A potted orchid I received for Valentines day had one ’stick’ with about 12 varigated ‘veiny’ pink and white blossoms on it. Gradually, all of the blossoms have come and gone and now it seems that the ’stick’ is wilting.  It is becoming wrinkly and translucent. This phenomena started at the top and is working its way down… Do orchids grow a new trunk every year?  or is my plant sick…. Help! Thx – Dave in Hood River

Response:

Dave, From your description of the orchid plant you received, it sounds like it may be a Phalaenopsis orchid.  I would recommend that you cut the stem down close to the base of the stem or (this is a qualified ‘or’ though) if you would like, if the lower part of the stem is still alive to cut the stem off about 1/4" to 1/2" above a stem node that did not produce any flowers, in 2 months it may produce another crop of flowers.  Now here is the qualifier, is the plant healthy other than the stem tip dying back and have you been watering and feeding it regularly? If you answered ‘no’ to one or both then cut it off as first suggested.
