"Inflorescence" is the botanical term for the flower stem…most growers just call them "spikes" for ease of typing/pronunciation/etc., even though the term "spike" is not botanically correct for orchid inflorescences. Hence if your plant is "exhibiting inflorescence", it’s growing a spike. Usually, for most Phals, this happens in late fall, sometimes needing to be prompted by exposure to cool night temperatures. — Prem . Animator, programmer, and orchid and fossil nut extraordinaire… . I keep hearing about "cool" Phals prefer lower night time temps, but "cool" has nothing to do with most hybrid phals initiation of an inflorescence. the two triggers for the descendant hybrids of tropical Asian and Philipino species are : 1. brighter light than growing conditions, and 2. lowered humidity Spikes initiate at the end of the monsoon. Hybrid vigor will often let them bloom with out one of these two, but for commercial flower production, of a sure bet gift, the combo WILL initiate a spike. Even if there’s one already present. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – When do you know if your phalaenopsis in exhibiting inflorescence? What is inflorescence?
