orchid feeding

Question:

Should orchids be keep on their regular feeding schedule when they start to put up flower spikes (mine is now), or should I cut back? Ohio here. Thanks.

Theresa, If your orchids bloom at different times of the year, then you should be using a balanced fertilizer like 20-20-20 or something similar.  If all or seperate groups of your plants bloom in the same season, then you can use grow and bloom formulas during the year.  After the newest growth (or phalaenopsis leaf) matures until the time the flower spike(s) are coming up and flowering, its best to use a bloom formula or one that is low in nitrogen (N) but high in phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) like 6-30-30. This tells the plant to stop growing and start blooming.  When all of your plants are in active growth then use a high nitrogen grow formula such as 30-10-10.  Remember, just because your plant is green and healthy doesn’t mean its actively growing, it may be going into a bloom cycle.  Hope this helps. — Matt Swift AOL Instant Messenger – "Tolumnia1" employed at Santa Barbara Orchid Estate Website: http://www.sborchid.com
