orchid media

Question:

Hi Shirley,      Good advice from Ray Barkalow, the choice of potting medium is dependent upon the type of orchid, your growing conditions plus your preferences in caring for them.      One additional means not mentioned by Ray is mounting them.   Many orchids in their native habitat grow from trees, you could attempt to duplicate this by mounting on sticks, limbs or plaques or even place them in basket type containers with little or no medium.      Good luck and good growing in whatever you choose to do with them.

Response:

Shirley may, There’s lots of options.  What types of plants are we talking about? Cattleyas, vandas, paphiopedilums, phalaenopsis…? Different plants have different needs.  I grow a lot of my own stuff in our semi-hydroponic mix (check our website for info), while others are in sphagnum, coconut fiber, or some other, more traditional bark/perlite/sphagnum/etc./etc. mix. The need to stabilize a plant should be temporary, that is, until it gets sufficient roots to hold itself up.  If that’s not the case, then something is amiss. One of the keys to orchid growing is to choose a medium that suits your conditions and culture. what can i buy to replant my new orchids other than orchid bark? what can i use to stablize my orchids? — Posted via Talkway – http://www.talkway.com Surf Usenet at home, on the road, and by email — always at Talkway.
