Pollinization and seed

Question:

You asked about Phal crosses and seed germination. First your English is just fine. What type of hybrid did you try to cross. Almost all white and pink hybrids, these days, are fertile. If the cross was a yellow or art shade, there is a high probability that the plant is infertile. It also sounds like you crossed the oldest flower on the spike. If so, try again on the youngest ( last to open) flower. I make from 100 to 150 Phal crosses a year and have tried every trick that I have read about to increase my percentage of takes. When making a self I usually take the pollen from another flower and leave the pollen intact on the pollen receptor. Don’t know if it helps or not. Everything else seems to be more rumor than fact. I have made a cross that took and then tried to repeat it and failed. I have no explaination but only give the advice to keep trying. Since the flower faided in two days it would seem that your technique was correct. As for the flasking, it sounds like everything is fine. It takes a year for the plants to obtain a spread of about 2-3 cm. The only ;thing you can do to speed this up is to increase the temp., I find 30-32 C to be near optimum. Fred Bergman

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Could you help me ? I tried (just for the fun …) to pollinize a phalaenopsis (hybrid) on the same flower. The flower faded 2 days later, but fell a few days later. The other flowers on the same spike remained beautiful for a long time. What does it mean ? Did I make a mistake or does it mean that this hybrid is sterile ? Another problem : I sowed some seeds from phalaenopsis in ready-to-use culture medium in a flask on february of this year. Some seeds began to germinate but now I’m still waiting for more development. So I put them under fluorescent light (Grolux tubes) and they have about 20-24 degrees Celsius. What can I do more ? Just keep cool and wait or did I make a mistake ? Could you rectify my english, because I’m trying to learn english together with orchid culture …. Thank you for your help

Karine, After pollenating Phals, the bloom will always drop within a few days or so. The question here is: Did the ovary drop (or yellow) as well, or is it still green? If still green then it’s still alive at the moment. As for the flasked seedlings, best not to move them around very much. Keep in temps of about 75f with subdued light. Or at least light that will not heat the container. Orchids in flask may grow in fits and starts. Expect the plants to be in there for well over a year. -Rod- Venger’s Orchids Website http://www.vengers.com/
