Shading my Orchids
Question:
Hi, I am building a small shelter in my backyard this summer in which to grow my orchids and there isnt any store near me that sells shade cloth.. So, I am considering using window screen to cover the shelter.. I actually went out in the yard to day and took too window screens (one on top of the other) and held them up to the sun, and it seemed to cast adequate light and shade on the ground.. Tell me, does anyone have any experience with this.. or is there something easier that I can use??
Response:
Mr AV I just purchased a commercial cut of 65% shadecloth for our outdoor orchid house. I could recommend a good source at a great price if you wanted to go that route. How much do you need? I got a 20×40 piece with all the trimmings (sewn edges with grommets every 2 feet) . My shade house is about 18×12x10high so it will cover most of it. The cost was about $125 + shipping. Hi MrA., There isn’t a Home Depot , Lowe’s or garden center near you that carries shade cloth? Most of the ones I have gone to here in the SF bay area carry shade cloth, although they seem to carry mostly the 70% shade cloth and if you live in the southern states that may be what you may need. If you live in the north then you may want 50% or less depending how far north you live. If you cannot find it, then you probably could make do with the window screen material, which is a little more costly. Good luck and good growing.
