Where do I start?
Question:
I can’t believe I did that. I thought this newsgroup was orchards and I can now see it is orchids. That’s what I get for getting on the computer at 3AM. Maybe there is such a thing as an orchard of orchids? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Well this is my lucky day (I hope) I am buying a large house on 5 acres of flat but not wet land in the Puget Sound area of Washington state near Arlington. The first thing I want to do is plant an orchard of various types of fruit trees that do well in this area. I was told I can grow: Asian pears Fuji Apples Golden Delicious Apples Bartlett pears Plums My land has direct sun for about 1 hour less than the whole day. Can someone tell me how many trees of each to plant to ensure pollination. There isn’t any way of knowing when I buy trees if it is male or female is there? I was guessing about 6 trees of each type. Do I simply buy the trees from a nursery or go to a wholesale store or to an apple grower or ? As the planted trees get bigger can I graft from them and plant more trees from the graft (correct terminology?)

LOL! From the descriptions of some rgo-ers, I would say that they live in an orchard of orchids
. Lucky them! Good luck w/ your fruit trees, BTW. In Costa Rica not too far from Monteverde there is an orchid garden, which is the closest thing I have ever seen to an orchid orchard. There were six foot tall branches stuck in the ground with hundreds of the local miniature orchids mounted on them (Lepanthes, Restrepia, Masdevallia, etc). What a sight! Good luck with your orchard, Scott (Is there really land on Puget Sound that is not wet??!) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I can’t believe I did that. Hi, I would also like to ask about what kind of light do you get in your indoor growing area? How warm/cold does it get in your growing area? These are also determining factors in which beginner orchid, be it Phal or Paph, will be a good starter plant. I hope that this helps. Later, Kevin, Southfield, Michigan – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello, Well, you’ve made a pretty good start already by logging onto this forum and asking a question. But for anyone to help with suggestions on what types of orchids you should try, it would help to know which area of the country you live. There are many different types of orchids which require varying growing conditions, so knowing where you live and the climate will help others help you. Another good place you might try would be the American Orchid Society website at: http://www.orchidweb.org Good luck!

Where is the best starting point for beginner orchid growers? If anyone knows where to lead me it would be great! Thanks Are you wondering about a beginner orchid? Or books, web sites,
cultural info? Here’s the URL for the American Orchid Society, that would probably be a good place to start:http://orchidweb.org/. Here is the URL of The OrchidMall, a very good site for all things orchid:http://www.orchidmall.com/. As for a beginning orchid, phalaenopsis orchids are pretty easy care-I started with them. If you are interested in orchid art, feel free to check out my website at http://www.rollanet.org/~mknisbet/. How’s that for a little shameless self promotion<g. Good luck and happy growing-this group can be a good place for advice, info, etc. Regards, Karen http://www.rollanet.org/~mknisbet/ Before you buy.
